(Section A: Reading)

1.Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:
The old Turkish and other races, who inhabited Afghanistan and parts of central Asia before the advent of Islam, were largely Buddhists and earlier still, during the period Epics, Hindus. The frontier area was one of the principal centres of old Indian Culture and it abounds still with ruins of monuments and monasteries and, specially, of the great university of Taxila, which was at the height of its fame two thousand year ago, attracting students from all over India as well as different parts of Asia. Changes of religion made difference but could not change entirely the mental backgrounds which the people of those areas had developed.

(a) What religious groups inhabited Afghanistan before the advent of Islam?

2. Write a report as the editor of your school magazine about Blood Donation Camp organised by your school.

Make notes on the given passage and then make summary of the passage with the help of notes:

Man then corded together the front legs of the horse and set it free. Thus tied, it could only hop about in the manner of a frog. From heaven the creator could see the horse, but not the cord. He grew red with shame. So, that was the sort of creature. He had made! He admitted to himself that it was one of the worst blunders into which he had ever fallen.

3. Write an article (Essay) on any one of the following topics in about 100-150 words:

(b) Importance of Games and Sports
(c) Unemployment in India

4. Write a letter to the editor of the Hindustan Times about the bad and broken roads in your locality.

Write a letter to your friend congratulating him on his success in the P.E.S. examination.

हैदराबाद की जलवायु बहुत अच्छी है। न यहाँ अधिक गर्मी पड़ती है और न ही अधिक जाड़ा। यहाँ वर्षा खूब होती है लेकिन सड़कों पर कीचड़ नहीं दिखाई देता। पठारी इलाका होने की वजह से यहाँ पानी बह जाता है और कहीं सड़कों पर इकट्ठा नहीं होता। अब तो जनसंख्या बढ़ जाने से कुछ अधिक गर्मी पड़ने लगी है। बसन्त के आने पर प्रकृति की शोभा यहाँ बढ़ जाती है। रास्तों पर वृक्षों की ठंडी छाया रहती है। वाटिकाओं से फूलों की सुगन्ध आती रहती है। दूर-दूर तक हरियाली दिखाई पड़ती है। देखकर मन आनन्दित होता है।
